About Mrs. Kieffer
Here we are at the Olympic Training Facility!
Hello! My name is Mrs. Kieffer and I'm the 3rd/4th grade English Language Development (ELD) teacher here at Village Meadows. This is my fifth year teaching here in the ELD department but I've been teaching for a total of 15 years throughout the Phoenix area. During my 15 years of teaching, I've taught first through fourth grades.
In 1996, I graduated from ASU West with a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education. Then, I earned my ESL (English as a Second Language) Endorsement along with my Master's degree in Elementary Education in 2000.
Together with my wonderful husband Matt we have a fourth grade daughter, Hannah, and a first grade son, Jackson. We love to travel and this summer we were lucky enough to go to Rocky Point, Mexico, Dillon, as well Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Early in June, we were looking for a quick escape from the heat so we went to the beach in Rocky Point, Mexico. It was such a wonderful escape as the temperatures were at least 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix. We played in the sand and walked on the beach. During the two days we were there the tides changed dramatically so we were able to explore the reef and tide pools on the beach during low tide. We spotted thousands of crabs, small fish, and even a sea horse carcass. I also read two books sitting on the beach and the patio.
At the end of June, we spent a week relaxing, hiking and horseback riding in Dillon, CO with Mr. Kieffer's mom, and brothers. Since my hand was still healing from the break, I did a lot of relaxing and stretching of my hand. All of us went on a hike close to the cabin where we were staying. It's always wonderful to see how the scenery changes the higher you climb. Even though our legs were sore from the hike, we decided to go horseback riding the next day. This was Hannah's and Jack's first horseback ride ever. Jack's first horse didn't like mine and kept trying to bite mine. It was scary so I had to trade horses with another rider. This still wasn't a good combination of horses so Jack traded with one of his uncles. After the second trade, all horses were happy but Jack and I ended up on very slow horses.
We were also able to tour the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs, CO. This tour was extra special because we were able to eat lunch in the same cafeteria as the Olympic athletes. Not all visitors to the Olympic Training Facility get to eat with the athletes. Mr. Kieffer has a friend who works there so, he gave us a behind the scenes tour. As Jack and I went to get dessert, we walked right past Michael Phelps, the winner of 16 Olympic medals. What an amazing experience. The only way it could've been better, is if we had seen athletes practicing their sports.
This was such a spectacular summer vacation.
I look forward to meeting each of you, hearing about your summers, and teaching you all you need to know to move on to the next grade level as well as to exit from the EL program.
Fondly,
Mrs. Kieffer
